I did this portrait as a relatively fast practice piece similar (but unrelated) to my Green Shadow painting. If only I could finish everything I do as quickly as this one, then I wouldn't get tired of them and enjoy them all the way through. Well, that's why I'm practicing! I felt like it had been a while since I'd really done many males--especially the somewhat less feminine kind (I bet most people would still find this one feminine, though *sigh*); hence the choice of subject. Hope you like and C&C welcome!

Manga Practice

Well, I said I wanted to practice doing a more manga-style coloring. Here's another try. ^^; I was bad and took an hour or so of my time out of working on a new painting I started over the weekend to do this quickie. I decided to paint in black and white to simplify things for me. (Except for the eyes, the color comes from two gradient maps--one for him and one for the background--so it's only partially controlled. Just wanted to spruce it up a little.) It's getting there, I guess. Gotta try painting directly in color next time. And please disregard the anatomy; this was mostly practice doing the face so I wasn't too concerned about it. ^^;

I originally wanted to go for a manga style look in this one, but as you can see, the coloring ended up being not quite as simplistic as I was aiming for. I guess I'll have to try again next time!
Hero Design - Azzy

Lively, expressive, happy-go-lucky, gregarious, with a touch of the mischievous. That's Azalea, or Azzy, as she prefers to be called. She's not too tactful, so you always know exactly what she thinks about everything. While what she says might hurt your feelings, remember that she isn't being intentionally malicious. In fact, Azzy is probably the sweetest person you'll ever meet and is especially a softie about anything that's cute. She is someone who is the best, most loyal friend you could have but would be the last person you'd want to see if she becomes your enemy. Of course, her naturally trusting personality means that you have to try really hard to get on her bad side, but it is possible, so don't push your luck too far!

Morning Star, Light Bearer, Son of Dawn,
Fallen from grace, descended into darkness.
His beauty smolders in the void
As he rages against his imprisonment
With the cries of the Original Sinners his constant companions
And the souls of the damned his servants...
Until one day
The drums of the Third War of Dominance begin their steady beat.
Calling him forth with the promise of redemption,
They rekindle the flame of his tattered heart
And set free at last this Holy Light we know as
Lucifer: Hell's Angel.
---
The textless and larger version of my final concept illustration for Dominance War III. I also made a few minor tweaks in this one. Unfortunately, I somehow accidentally merged all my Photoshop layers at the end, but I'd still appreciate comments and critiques for future work!

[EDIT 2/6/07]
I went ahead and edited the painting according to the critiques here. I fixed the shadow under the nose; I added more shadow to her eyes, the boa, the bustier, and under the fan; I moved her right iris to the image's left a touch; and although no one said anything about it, I altered the secondary highlight on her lips slightly. Hopefully that about covers it!

You wander now through these dark woods as the cancer eats at you, but I can guide you to a world where a new day is dawning and hope yet lives. So come with me, and leave your despair to yesterday."
--
This is my entry for the breast cancer awareness art contest being sponsored by theotaku.com and AnimeFF, a non-profit anime convention in Las Vegas. I used Photoshop for some color correction, but otherwise, the entire thing was painted in Painter. I kind of lost track of how much time it took (actually, I forgot to start keeping track), but I can say that I spent way too long on it... C&C away!

[EDIT 1/27/07]
I've finally gotten around to modifying this painting a bit. The main changes are in her face, in her back, and in the background colors. Also, I never did like the "ribbon" in her belt--it was admittedly a bit of an afterthought to make this painting more related to breast cancer awareness--so I changed it to something more like what I originally had in mind. All the alterations were done in Photoshop.
I've finally been having success in Painter for the past week or so now and I'm loving the program. So I used this self-portrait as another opportunity to practice Painter. I didn't keep track of time too closely, but it was probably around 5 hours for this one. C&C if you would like! ^^;

Purple Rose Character Concept

I did this character concept for a tutorial. When I came up with her and was painting her, I had not put any thought into a background, which was perhaps a mistake. Nevertheless, I will be giving her a background, and when that is done, this image will be updated! Here's a 100% detail of her:

The Magpie's Gift

This was a gift for my parents' 35th anniversary, whose contemporary gift is jade. The woman is the personification of a magpie, the Chinese symbol of happiness. She offers a jade figurine of two cranes, symbolic of everlasting marriage. Since I've already given the gift, I probably won't be changing anything, but critique is always welcome for future improvement!

This is a birthday gift for KAMIJO, the vocalist of my favorite (Japanese) band LAREINE. It's supposed to be a stylized picture of him but it turned out to be on the too-realistic side of the style. ^^; Critiques are definitely welcome since although I have to call this finished to send it off, I want to improve my painting!
A couple of 100% detail shots:
